An accident abroad

In case of an accident abroad, depending on the country in which the perpetrator’s vehicle is registered, what data should be noted down and where the loss or damage should be reported:

1. Involving a vehicle registered in Poland.

Note down:
  • the registration number and make of the perpetrator’s vehicle,
  • the number of the insurance policy and the name of the company with which the perpetrator’s vehicle is insured,
  • data concerning the driver (given name, name, address)
Call the police or draw up, together with the perpetrator, a statement of the circumstances of the event (pick up a Joint Notification of Loss printed form).

On your return to Poland present your claim to the insurance company with which the perpetrator has effected his Civil Liability insurance.

2. Involving a vehicle registered in one of the EEA countries or Switzerland.

Note down:
  • the registration number and make of the perpetrator’s vehicle,
  • the country of registration of the perpetrator’s vehicle,
  • the number of the insurance policy and the name of the company with which the perpetrator’s vehicle is insured,
  • data concerning the driver (given name, name, address)
Call the police or draw up, together with the perpetrator, a statement of the circumstances of the event (pick up a Joint Notification of Loss printed form).

Present your claim to the insurance company with which the perpetrator has effected his Civil Liability insurance or to the claims representative in Poland of the foreign insurance company.

If we know the name of the insurance company with which the perpetrator has concluded a contract of Civil Liability insurance and the country of registration of the vehicle, we can identify the claims representative in Poland of the foreign insurance company through the Polish Motor Insurers’ Bureau.

If we do not know the name of the insurance company with which the perpetrator has concluded a contract of Civil Liability insurance, we may request the PMIB to establish the necessary data completing a printed form of request for establishing the insurer of the perpetrator of the loss and his claims representative.

3. Involving a vehicle registered in a country from outside the EEA holding a valid Green Card.

Note down:

  • the full number of the Green Card and its validity period,
  • the name of the insurance undertaking which has issued the Green Card.
Call the police or draw up, together with the perpetrator, a statement of the circumstances of the event (pick up a Joint Notification of Loss printed form).

Present the claim to the National Bureau of the country of the event, the address of which is on the reverse side of the Green Card and which will supply the injured party with instructions as to further procedure.

4. Involving a vehicle registered in a country from outside the EEA , in the territory of that country.

Note down:
  • the registration number of the perpetrator’s vehicle,

  • the full number of the Civil Liability insurance policy and its period of validity,
