The Polish Motor Insurers' Bureau is an organization of insurance undertakings which in the territory of Poland carry on the business of compulsory insurance against civil liability of
holders of motor vehicles. In accordance with the provisions of the Act on Compulsory Insurance, the Insurance Guarantee Fund and the Polish Motor Insurers' Bureau,
membership of the Polish Motor Insurers' Bureau is compulsory for such undertakings and commences on the day of obtaining from the supervisory body the license to write insurance.
In accordance with the rules of the Green Card System the Polish Motor Insurers' Bureau performs the function of a
National Bureau representing Poland within the System and being a member of the Council of Bureaux. Fulfilling the requirements set by the so-called Geneva Recommendation
(Recommendation No. 5 on Insurance of Motorists Against Third Party Risks - 25.01.1949); 1984, 2000, 2004) the Polish Motor Insurers' Bureau is an organization recognized by the
government of the Republic of Poland which has signed and is signing appropriate agreements with its counterparts in other countries - members of the Green Card System.
Polish membership of the Green Card System dates back to 1958, when after the introduction in Poland of compulsory insurance against civil liability in respect of the use of conveyances
(1952) the State Insurance Establishment was granted membership of the Council of Bureaux .
As a result of subsequent changes in Polish legislation the representation of Poland in the
System was transferred in turn to the WARTA Insurance and Reinsurance Company Ltd (1960 - 1990), the Polish Green Card Bureau (1990 - 1996) and the Polish Motor Insurance
Bureau (from 10.05.1996) established on the strength of Section 10 of the Amendment to the Insurance Activities Act of 28.07.1990.
The amended Act of 08.06.1995 granted the
Polish Motor Insurance Bureau the status of a legal person and stated that it takes over all functions, rights and obligations of the Polish Green Card Bureau.
From 01.01.2004, in accordance with the provisions of the Act on Compulsory Insurance, the Insurance Guarantee Fund and the Polish Motor Insurers' Bureau, the obligatory name is the
Polish Motor Insurers' Bureau.
