Domestic civil liability insurance

Motor third party liability insurance is a compulsory insurance that applies in situations where the owner or driver of a vehicle causes damage to other persons and, in accordance with applicable law, is liable for such damage.

Compensation for the injured party is paid by the insurance company, with which the perpetrator has concluded an appropriate insurance contract, and, in the case of an insurance company operating in Poland on the basis of the freedom of services – by its appointed representative.

Therefore, this insurance protects both the property of the person responsible for the accident, as well as guarantees the injured party that their claims will be satisfied.

In Poland, as in most European countries, this insurance is compulsory.

In accordance with the provisions of the Act on Compulsory Insurance, the Insurance Guarantee Fund, and the Polish Motor Insurers’ Bureau, every owner of a motor vehicle registered in Poland is obliged to conclude a compulsory motor third party liability insurance contract for damage caused in connection with the movement of his/her vehicle.

MTPL insurance for motor owners covers incidents that occur in Poland as well as incidents that occur on the territory of countries, whose National Bureaux are signatories of the Multilateral Agreement (i.e. EEA countries, Andorra, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Switzerland, United Kingdom).

Motor third party liability insurance is concluded for a period of 12 months. Exceptions to this rule are provided for in the Act on Compulsory Insurance, UFG and PBUK.
